Synthesis of phthalimido β-lactams via the Staudinger reaction using polyaromatic imines

Synthesis of a few trans 3-phthalimido substituted â-lactams from polyaromatic imines has been achieved following Staudinger reaction. The formation of the trans â-lactams has been explained through an isomerization of the intermediate iminium ion.
