Development of C-C sigma bond activation has the potential to have an impact on natural product synthesis, much like recent work in C-H activation. One of the most important areas in this field is activation of organonitriles (C-CN bond activation), with different metals reacting in both a stoichometric and catalytic processes. We report a catalytic asymmetric C-CN bond activation and will showcase our findings in the context of total synthesis of (-) horsfilin and (-) coerulescine.
