The improvement of teaching is a research problem addressing the question “What have my students learned?” The enhancement of student learning is subject to the experimental method of hypothesis, experiment, observation, analysis, and improvement. We at the Center for the Integration of Research, Teaching and Learning (CIRTL) suggest that the concept of Teaching-as-Research can play a powerful role in engaging STEM graduates-through-faculty in reform of teaching practice. This perspective naturally leads to self-sustained, ongoing improvement of STEM education. Our ultimate goal is to develop STEM faculties throughout higher education who themselves continuously inquire into their students' learning, and as such we focus on the preparation of future faculty in STEM graduate programs. We have implemented this idea within an interdisciplinary learning community at UW-Madison that has included over 1500 STEM graduate students, post-docs, and faculty over the past five years. CIRTL has now expanded to include 6 major research universities.
