This talk gives an overview on research relationship and developmental processes by the author involving research and development in smart coatings that have interesting applications in displays and efficient windows. The overview includes needs and develpments in the coatings industry and the use of macromolecular assembly methods. A number of US, European, and Japanese companies have research and development efforts partnering with universities in the US. It is important to identify organizations and groups that have strong representations in the coatings industry here in the US and abroad. The smooth transition towards patented technologies involves a very good liason between the intellectual property office, the professors (groups) involved in research and their industrial collaborators. A summary of the patent and provisional patent disclosure protocols will be discussed.
