| The University of Southern Mississippi and The University of Southern Mississippi Research Foundation have always encouraged commercialization of the technology developed at the University. The challenge at USM and other universities is to develop technologies needed in the marketplace and drive them through a commercialization process. The Mississippi University Research Authority (MURA) led the passing of legislation which encouraged and promoted commercialization of technology developed by Mississippi University faculty, known as the MURA Act. M and USM Research Foundation have supported a model that created a start-up company, Noetic Technologies, Inc., that established a primary technical marketing and commercialization entity for the University and the Foundation while also serving as the technology transfer office. The Noetic Commercialization Model will be presented. The presentation will also include commercialization challenges, lessons learned and best practices. Examples of start-up companies and partnerships with industrial partners, including renewable resource based polymeric coatings and starch-based thermoplastics, will be used to support the model. |
