Currently, there is significant interest among policy makers, the research community, and implementers in providing safe water to the 1.1 billion people without access to improved water supplies worldwide. This interest has sparked numerous village level and national scale projects to provide treated drinking water in order to reduce the burden of waterborne disease worldwide. This presentation will review both successful and failed water treatment interventions in African and Asian countries and discuss the way forward based on the evaluation, and overcoming technical barriers to scaling-up of current interventions. The presentation will specifically focus on water treatment at the point-of-use, mechanisms for at-scale implementation, and the role of the research community in evaluating and scaling-up interventions.
