Renewable energy and resources is an exciting area that offers significant opportunities for chemists, engineers, farmers, entrepreneurs and legislators to name a few. Some of the drivers for the high level of interest include: high crude oil and gasoline prices, increased tensions in the Middle East, increased world demand for energy, and increased green house gas emissions. Renewable feedstocks offer the potential to decrease dependence on foreign oil, utilize renewable and recyclable resources, and improve air quality by reducing emissions of greenhouse gases. This presentation will focus on the state of the renewable energy and resources industries today and identify areas of growth. It will also cover emerging areas where technology advancements in chemistry, engineering, and mechanical designs are critical for continued growth will be identified. This presentation will conclude with a summary of the multidisciplinary research effort needed to solve the technical problems that will ultimately enable widespread development and commercialization.
