Major scientific societies have current initiatives to increase the participation of students with educational challenges (deaf, blind, etc.), female, and minority students in academic majors and careers in science. The Laboratory Science Technology (LST) program at the National Technical Institute for the Deaf (NTID) at Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) has been involved in several projects to remediate this issue of small numbers of underrepresented students who pursue majors and careers in science. The LST program is involved in outreach activities, namely; Tech Girlz, Explore Your Future, Steps to Success, and the Summer Vestibule Program. The LST program has also established a “Science Club”. Using this club as the vehicle, outreach and mentoring programs with the local schools for the deaf are initiated. Our goal is to promote the realization that students who are members of an underrepresented community can find enjoyment and success in the field of science.
