| The American Chemical Society Student Affiliates Chapter (ACSSA) at the University of Central Florida seeks to foster a cohesive community among students that promotes a positive image of Chemistry. The chapter strives to bring chemistry awareness to the general public through appreciation and understanding. Through this process the organization also has a profound influence on chemistry education. The University of Central Florida chapter emphasizes chemical education by having outreach demos at the Orlando Science Center, tutoring peers in chemistry, holding advising events for underclassmen, and promoting research that is currently being conducted at the University of Central Florida. Through these events the ACSSA helps to ensure that the chemistry curriculum stays relevant. In addition, the chapter holds a Teacher Appreciation Brunch every semester within the Chemistry. These brunches help promote the club's events, recruit new members, and strengthen the relationship with the faculty. In the spirit of the 2008 Olympics the chapter members plan to hold a themed Chemistry event where students can put their laboratory techniques to the test. This event will also give other students the opportunity to use equipment that they have yet to use in their lab classes. These types of events are excellent opportunities for underclassmen to learn new laboratory techniques and/or make use of their existing skills. |
