X-ray spectroscopic studies were performed on a series of oxidized metal-salen complexes. Studies at the metal and ligand X-ray edges are reported. Variations in the salen ligand are used to study the electronic effects of the ligand perturbation on metal effective nuclear charge and metal-ligand covalency. These results are used to interpret other spectroscopic data. The ability of X-ray absorption spectroscopy as a tool for electronic structure analysis in oxidized metal-salen complexes is investigated.
