The Tuskegee University SAACS (TUSAACS) focuses on community service and fostering public appreciation for science and education. For the 2006-2007 school year, members assisted with the “Science on Saturday” program, designed to create a positive, hands-on experience for K-8 students and their parents. TUSSACS helped set up and conduct science experiments demonstrating applications of chemistry. For elementary school students, the chapter offered tutorials twice each week; sponsored an ice cream social at a where students made their own ice-cream; held and a poster contest for 4th graders. The theme for the poster contest was “chemistry in the home”. TUSSACS created a display about National Chemistry week and upcoming activities. For National Mole Day, it sponsored a contest using skittles and Avogadro's number to calculate the number of Moles of Skittles in a container. For Earth Month, TUSAACS received a grant to sponsor activities that included recycling, planting flowers, and a Haiku contest.
