During 2007, the Union University SAACS chapter reached out to our world in many ways. Two SAACS officers were part of a team from Union University travelling to North Africa. The team taught local farmers how to perform soil and water tests, and worked in schools teaching soil chemistry to children. SAACS also participated in an urban forest inventory for the City of Jackson, Tennessee, in collaboration with the Tree Board of Jackson. Another outreach involved members cooperating with the Boys and Girls Clubs of Jackson through a CISA grant. Underprivileged children were engaged in hands-on teaching demonstrations and activities. In September, SAACS hosted the Kentucky Lake ACS Section Meeting. The speaker for the meeting was Dr. John J. Fortman, 2007 recipient of the Helen M. Free Award for Public Outreach. This year, Union University SAACS has been afforded the opportunity to touch many lives.
