Looking back over a thirty-year career in chemical education, there are a number of insights and issues I can share with other chemical educators. I have served as a Director and Coordinator of General Chemistry, the General Chair of the 18th BCCE, Chair-Elect of the Division of Chemical Education, Vice-Chair of the Gordon Research Conference on Chemical Education Research and Practice, Advanced Placement Chemistry Board member, and ACS General Chemistry Exam Committee Chair. The presentation will include a discussion of the qualifications necessary to be appointed to a tenure-track faculty position, as a chemical educator in a chemistry department, the range of external grants, publications, and national service necessary to earn tenure in a chemistry department, how to focus your time and effort on worthwhile projects, how chemistry faculty evaluate chemical educators, volunteering for Division of Chemical Education committees and projects, and on the job mistakes and blunders to avoid.
