| Synthesis of CdSe quantum dots was accomplished by modifying a published procedure. The time stability of the quantum dots in solution of 1-octedecene was monitored to assess effects of temperature, UV radiation, and storage conditions. It was found that all quantum dots showed a blue shift in fluorescence, and those sets quenched with liquid nitrogen showed a simple, predictable blue shift. Those not quenched with liquid nitrogen showed very erratic shifts in wavelengths. Quantum dots were dried by heating the sample, and the dots were then dissolved in diethyl ether and placed on pieces of cloth. These cloth pieces were placed in different environments, and it was found that irradiation by UV light and hot, humid environments produced the largest shift in peak wavelengths. |
