A key challenge in developing a laboratory course is ensuring both the proper chemical concepts and laboratory skills are addressed in the curriculum. A course content map is introduced, that explicitly identifies both the chemical concepts illustrated and laboratory manipulative skills utilized within each experiment. The laboratory course content map additionally shows the connection and progression of the individual experiments into an integrated learning experience. The mapping exercise enables the implementation of an introduce/reinforce/use model for laboratory skills development.
