The research experience for chemistry majors at Bridgewater State College has been a key focal point of our program over the last five years. Currently the chemistry faculty is at mentoring capacity while teaching 4/4 teaching loads. We have to be creative to address the provision of a capstone undergraduate research experience to a larger pool of majors. This includes the use of several new courses, “Introduction to Research and Chemistry Seminar” to prepare students for research work. Our CH-391 Research course enables a faculty member to mentor students on collective work in the laboratory. Efforts to address the increased student interest in undergraduate research include using a team-based approach to build greater continuity and engagement with our student researchers and chemistry majors in general. The courses, structure of our programs, and types of team-based research efforts being undertaken by the Bridgewater State College chemistry undergraduate researchers will be presented.
