| A challenge students have in introductory laboratory courses is having a clear understanding of what is expected of them. This can be further complicated when the course has many sections and multiple instructors. A course-wide grading rubric for each experiment in our Chemical Principles course sequence has been implemented. The course-wide grading rubric has created consistent grading standards across the 10 sections of laboratory. Students receive the grading rubric before each experiment giving them a clear understanding of what is expected in the formal laboratory report. The grading rubric has particular benefits to the adjunct instructors who teach a high proportion of these sections. The standardized rubrics allow new adjuncts to quickly come up to speed regarding conceptual emphasis and assessment criteria for each experiment. A comparison of sections with and without the standardized rubric will be made. |
