Ferrocenylketene is the simplest ketene bearing an organometallic moiety. Ketenes are well known for their ability to undergo [2+2] cycloaddition reactions with a variety of ketenophiles. We have investigated the reaction of ferrocenylketene with 2,3-dihydropyran. Analysis of the products by NMR spectroscopy will be used to determine the regiochemistry and stereochemistry of the reaction. Comparing our results to published studies involving ketenes can provide useful information concerning the influence of the ferrocenyl substituent on the reactivity of the ketene group.
