We present the activities of the University of Alabama at Birmingham Student Affiliates chapter to demonstrate our effort to promote the organization's mission of professional development and community involvement. To promote student involvement and education in chemistry, our chapter has been involved in chemical demonstrations at a local elementary school; Relay for Life, sponsored by the American Cancer Association; and the Salvation Army “Angel Tree” at Christmas. Each month, we host a speaker who is from local industry our university. Through these monthly meetings, we strive to provide chemistry majors with information career options they can pursue with their chemistry degree and address questions or concerns they have. We try to raise community awareness about chemical safety in the home during National Chemistry Week by setting up an information table at a local Wal-Mart to hand out fliers to parents and stickers and books to children.
