Aryl sulfoxides are known to undergo photoinduced radical DNA cleavage. Synthesis of 9-(methylsulfoxide)anthracene has been accomplished in two steps, beginning with 9-bromoanthracene. DNA cleavage studies with this specific aryl sulfoxide will be discussed along with investigations into binding effects and cleavage mechanism.
