Our initiative, consist a nucleus of university students (fellows) with multidisciplinary knowledge, experiences, and skills in chemistry and technology establish strong, scientific and technological, links with K-12 teachers and students. Three expository programs form the coherent relationship: (1) Chemistry demonstrations, (2) GLOBE (Global Learning and Observations to Benefit the Environment, and (3) GLOBE based Calculator Based Laboratory. Initially, fellows are trained in the protocols to lead the activities of: (a) science demonstrations, (b) teachers weeklong workshops, (c) Saturday academies, and (d) visit to schools. Since the year 2001, fellows (108) have trained 464 teachers and 20,516 students in their 464 visit to schools, 17 workshops and 66 follow-up activities. A significant result has been substantial increase in the number of freshmen students that are accepted and pursue careers in chemistry, by the use of the GLOBE program as platform for environmental education, at the University of Puerto Rico at Mayagüez.
