| As a small liberal arts institution, Washington & Jefferson College values strong relationships between students, faculty, and the local community. All of our activities and community outreach projects serve to spark interest in chemistry throughout southwestern Pennsylvania. Exciting social events such as rock climbing, white-water rafting, and annual picnics and parties bring students and faculty together. The major community outreach project this year entailed promoting interest in science to middle school students through the chemistry of fireworks. W&J SAACS also celebrates National Chemistry Week by demonstrating household chemistry, coordinating a dinner with the chemistry faculty, and transforming our chemistry hall into a haunted house open to the public. By inviting off-campus speakers and encouraging W&J students and faculty to share research presentations, our organization seeks to ignite personal and professional development. This contribution will emphasize the ways in which W&J SAACS acts as an indispensable resource to the surrounding communities. |
