The Bridgewater State College (BSC) Center for Sustainability recently supported a workshop on “Integrated Sustainability and Green Chemistry”. The initiative catalyzed a series of discussions involving BSC chemistry faculty, staff, and students to better understand the role sustainability plays in the chemical enterprise, and discuss how to integrate chemical sustainability into teaching, research, K-12 outreach, and departmental operations. The project has led to an increased emphasis on renewable energy and green chemistry in the organic chemistry lecture and labs, discussions on integrating guided-inquiry learning in the introductory courses, and increased emphasis on recycling and energy conservation in departmental operations. Students have also organized to form a green entrepreneurial group, the “Renewable Energy Action Team” (REACT). Our goal is to prepare the next generation of creative, innovative and socially responsible chemists who will be the future teachers, researchers, government officials, and entrepreneurs in the sustainable chemistry enterprise.
