In an effort to improve student learning in the introductory Organic Chemistry Laboratory course at Cal Poly Pomona, I have introduced a series of online prelab quizzes. These Blackboard quizzes, which can be submitted by the student multiple times, ensure better preparation and enhance learning by providing plenty of immediate, customized feedback. More importantly, such Internet-based tools can provide a meaningful learning opportunity which is outside of the short, three-hour weekly laboratory period.

Also, I have created a series of online “skill-builder” quizzes to teach the topic of organic stereochemistry. Each of the five quizzes draws from a database of questions. Since each quiz is unique, students can take the quizzes repeatedly. Like the prelab quizzes, abundant feedback is provided along with the answer to each quiz question. Student response to these online quizzes has been quite enthusiastic and overwhelmingly positive.
