The You Be the Chemist (YBTC) Challenge is similar to a quiz bowl, where students prepare for regional, state, and national level competitions. During the 2006-2007 school year the SAACS chapter at Louisiana State University volunteered to help revise the YBTC Challenge material. This included re-organizing, editing, and writing new sections for YTBC study guides, and writing new multiple-choice questions for each level of competition. This was a year-long effort to complete, along-side local SAACS activities. Four of the participating officers served as moderators for the National Challenge. Twelve nervous kids of the estimated ten thousand national participants as nearly eighty family members and industry sponsors supported them in the audience. The National Challenge concluded a year of worthwhile dedication for everyone involved. To help in future competitions or start a local competition in their area, contact CEF Programs & Outreach Coordinator Corianne Bradley at cbradley@chemed.org.
