This year, the UMHB ACS Student Affiliates Chapter celebrated National Chemistry Week with its 14th annual “Demos in the Dark: Things That Go Bang and Boom in the Night.” The event was co-sponsored by the UMHB Chemistry Department and the Heart O'Texas Section of the American Chemical Society. More than 1000 chemistry fans attended the event that took place on October 23rd and 25th, 2007. Attendees obtained entry by bringing a nonperishable food item to be donated to the “Helping Hands Ministry” of Belton, Texas. Some of the experiments that were performed were: Tower of Colors, Electric Pickle, Methane Mambo, and Dr. Watson's famous Elephant Toothpaste. The event was closed with a BANG after various explosions of balloons lit the night sky. Post-event activities included “Make Your Own Slime,” liquid nitrogen Slushies, and the distribution of NCW-themed, helium-filled balloons. It was concluded that this was an extremely successful NCW event.
