| The multinuclear capability of the Anasazi Eft 60 FTNMR instrument has been used to characterize precursors, intermediates and products in a synthetic scheme to obtain hydrochloride salts of O-(2,2,2-trifluoroethyl)-hydroxylamine and O-(3,3,3,2,2-pentafluropropyl)-hydroxylamine. The synthesis comprised preparation of the appropriate triflates, followed by reaction with N-hydroxy-phthalimide and hydrolysis of the resulting product. Proton and fluorine spectra were obtained and, in a few cases, carbon spectra. Chemical shifts and coupling constants have been determined in most cases. In addition to the species in the scheme above, several related compounds have been studied. These studies will be used to design undergraduate laboratory experiments. .
