CHED 129 |
| In this experiment, the organic chemistry laboratory students synthesized derivatives of the antibiotic sulfanilamide. After optimizing their synthesis and purifying their products, each organic group shared their product with a group from the biochemistry lab. The biochemistry groups evaluated the antibacterial effectiveness of the derivatives and the control (sulfanilamide) on the bacteria E. coli and B. subtilis. They evaluated both the bactericidal and the bacteriostatic effects of the derivatives. After the project was completed, both lab sections met for a collaborative poster session. They discussed their results and compared any structure activity relationships that were evident. |
