| The Science Writing Heuristic (SWH), developed at Iowa State University, is designed to provide a more inquiry-based structure to laboratory activities and has been used in many chemistry courses at Saint Vincent College since 2005. Each year we solicit feedback from students and faculty to determine the perceived effect of the SWH on student learning. After the spring 2007 offering of General Chemistry II laboratory, concerns were expressed by students and faculty regarding students' abilities to ask meaningful “Beginning Questions” before conducting the lab (an essential component of the SWH) and the time that students spent writing reports. To address these concerns, we offered a one-day workshop for all instructors of General Chemistry just before the fall 2007 semester and significantly restructured the way that we implement the SWH. This presentation will describe the changes made as well as discuss the results of these changes and implications for future offerings. |
