| Art-inspired chemistry laboratory experiments will serve to provide context for non-majors and majors alike. While there are art-related labs available, we propose to expand these offerings to include labs with both increased artistic and chemical rigor. For example, we have recently developed a laboratory on drying oils, which are used in paints because they ‘dry' to form a tough solid layer through a radical polymerization process. This module allows students to explore chemically what makes an oil a “good” drying oil. This lab was designed to make it appropriate for students of many levels. For non-science majors, this lab can teach simple analytic techniques, whereas and for more advanced students, there are more complex stoichiometry calculations and insights into the reactions that form the dried paint. These experiments are tunable by the instructor to range from a more simplistic cookbook methodology up to students exploring their own unknowns. |
