| Playwrights use a number of well-established principles and techniques to compel audiences to grapple with problems. These age-old strategies can be adapted and used to teach chemistry in formal and informal settings, offering students new and effective ways to learn it. These practices include (1) using a dramatic question to spark interest, focus learning objectives, and structure presentations; (2) establishing connections with learners through host characters; and (3) involving learners in kinesthetic dramatizations that model chemical concepts. This session will describe how these techniques are used in a college transfer course for non-majors, and what these students say about it. It will also discuss the role of these practices in the “Amazing Chemical Circus,” a family outreach event created by Fusion Science Theater. Fusion Science Theater is an NSF-funded Informal Science Education project that combines theater and traditional science demonstrations to create engaging and educational outreach events. |
