Belmont University's student affiliates host two week-long events each year designed to draw attention to the discipline and make connections with the “real world.” To celebrate national chemistry week, students participate in three types of events. The first involves a Mole Day fundraiser. The second is a presentation of chemistry that goes “boom!” to the students of Belmont's campus. The final event involves bringing area high school students to campus for hands-on experience. In the spring, Belmont students organize a weeklong event focusing on several aspects of forensics science. The week begins with a screening of popular T.V. series (C.S.I., Numbers, etc.) followed by a discussion on the realities of data collection and analysis. The week ends with an opportunity for students to put their sleuthing skills to work to solve a staged crime after observing the evidence.
