Science in the City is a project of the NSF Division of Chemistry Discovery Corps Fellowships. The project combined formal and informal learning in a unique way that allowed students to see the relevance of science to their daily lives. The basis of Science in the City was for the fellow to supervise and assist students in the process of designing and constructing exhibits for a local science center. The exhibits were portable and displayed in various venues around the city and at the science center for a period of 1 to 3 months. The goals of Science in the City were to study the effects of exhibit building on student attitudes and beliefs about science, determine the process students would use to collaboratively create exhibits, and to increase community awareness of science. Science in the City can now be used as a model for new programs that bring current science topics to the community. The talk will focus on the outcomes of the project as well as the exhibits produced by the students.
