This discussion will provide information about the structure and content of a course developed for elementary education majors that are required to take a chemistry course with a laboratory. This type of course must address basic scientific principles and give the students enough confidence in their own lab abilities to adapt variable materials available from school districts to the appropriate grade level. The course requires 2 hours a week of lecture with 3 hours a week of a laboratory experience. Students complete laboratories that are appropriate to be directly used in an elementary school setting and help teachers meet PA state standards for elementary science education. The students are taught the scientific theories to understand the laboratories in lecture as well as some additional college level chemistry material. This presentation will provide information on curricular content and assignments that helped develop student independence.
