Community service to Barry University and public outreach to the Miami community are two key elements that enabled the Barry University Chemistry Club/Student Affiliates chapter to be an “Outstanding” “Green Chemistry” chapter. Dedicated and enthusiastic students present a positive face of chemistry by performing “chemistry magic shows/demonstrations” to third graders at local elementary schools, participating in an elementary school's after-school SCEME program and NCW “Science Day at the Mall”. Club members participated in Habitat-for-Humanity, the American Cancer Society's Relay for Life, and collected Christmas gifts for children with AIDS. Club members do peer tutoring, host a NCW info table, assist with Barry's annual high school Science Olympiad, invite seminar speakers, and host meetings of the South Florida ACS section. The Chem Club presented a Green Chemistry lecture, posted Green Chemistry articles on the bulletin board and in the Club's newsletter, and collected printer ink and toner cartridges and cell phones for recycling.
