| The synthesis of 4'-(p-aminophenyl)-2,2':6',2”-terpyridine (PAPT) has been reported in the literature, but few metal derivatives have been synthesized. This ligand has the capability for metal complexation along with an amine site for possible Schiff base chemistry. The reaction of PAPT and potassium tetrachloropalladate(II) produced a red semi-crystalline solid that was recrystallized from methanol by slow diffusion of ether. The structure, [PdCl(PAPT)]Cl, was established by single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. The synthesis of a 2:1 complex of potassium tetrachloropalladate(II) : PAPT in which one Pd(II) bonds to the terpyridine moiety and a second Pd(II) bonds to the p-aminophenyl group will be described, as well as the metal complexation of PAPT with Au(III) and Co(III). Characterization methods include single-crystal X-ray diffraction, 1H NMR spectroscopy, IR spectroscopy, and elemental analysis. |
