| Our recent work on what organic chemistry graduate students believe they learn during the research phase of their Ph.D. revealed that the essence of their experiences is the development of their identities as organic chemists. We are currently investigating the students' self-concepts of being organic chemists. This presentation will focus on organic chemistry graduate students' beliefs regarding the following: What is organic chemistry?; What do practicing organic chemists do?; How does one become an organic chemist?; and How does one learn organic chemistry? In addition to presenting the results from this study, implications for training future chemists will be discussed. |
