North Idaho College (NIC) has a mission to provide educational access to a large geographical area, rural communities and to students that work 20 or more hours per week. In order to meet these demands NIC has increased course offerings via the internet and recently set a goal of offering an on-line associate's degree. To earn a degree students are required to take two laboratory science courses, the lecture portions of which have been offered on-line for several years. Unfortunately, the students still need to travel to campus to attend laboratory sections. In order to provide better access for students, an on-line chemistry course for non-science majors was developed with a laboratory component based on chemistry at home. Students are now provided with a lab kit, including a balance and thermometer, contained entirely in a shoe box, and the experiments on CD all for $50. The development of the kit, the laboratory experiments and the versatility of the kit will be presented.
