Illinois State University is a comprehensive doctoral I university that grew out of a primarily teacher education past. We are in the midst of our 150th anniversary. The university has housed secondary education in the academic departments for the past 40 years. During that time, the chemistry department has always had one faculty member who was primarily responsible for chemistry teacher education. The academic preparation of the faculty members occupyng that position has moved from traditionally trained to chemical education. In this presentation, we will describe those changes and that person's relationship to the other chemistry faculty. In the past ten years, ISU made a slight change in their tenure and promotion guidelines that opened up huge opportunity for success for chemical education faculty. These changes coupled to a ruthless adherence to the rules for tenure and promotion will be described. Perhaps it will help you to find the best institution for yourself, or to mentor others in their choices.
