Conversion of periodic system pattern recognition activities into a computer program has opened a window into how students work with complex data sets. Multiple activities can be designed with varying difficulty during which the on-screen arrangement process is captured for later playback. Results from research involving General Chemistry students working with two different data sets, one visual and one using chemical data, will be presented and discussed.
