In this paper, examples of contextual learning activities used in a general chemistry laboratory will be discussed. These activities allow students to process chemistry in a way that makes sense to them in their own frames of reference by letting them find useful applications of the concepts in their current lives, imagined future careers and unfamiliar workplace locations. Students participate regularly in interactive groups where sharing, communicating, and responding to important concepts and decision-making occur via improved written and oral communication skills in addition to mathematical reasoning and achievement.
