We have recently designed an undergraduate organic laboratory practical exam to assess individual students in basic manipulations of organic substances, the safe and effective use of basic equipment, and the simple, practical hands-on in-lab problem-solving skills. The skills being evaluated are those required for effective scientific inquiry in a modern research laboratory setting. The practicum is composed of several "stations" designed to evaluate the practical knowledge and abilities of the students in areas such as lab safety, yield determination, extraction, TLC analysis, product isolation, distillation, NMR analysis, etc. Design elements, students' results and assessments, as well as key benefits and challenges will be presented.
