We have examined the reductive dissolution of synthetic sodium birnessite and hydrated manganese oxide(HMO) in solutions of arsenic(III). In situ and batch experiments were conducted and birnessite particles were subsequently examined using atomic force microscopy (AFM). Phase Imaging conducted at pH 9 showed the presence of secondary layer suggesting solution precipitation on the particle surface after treating with arsenite compared to the as such particles. We have examined our AFM images in conjunction with X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and have observed a correlation between manganese speciation and phase imaging.
