CHED 33 |
| This session is a primer in basic polymer chemistry. It provides teachers with background material and demonstrations/labs/activities to allow them to feel comfortable incorporating polymer chemistry into their curriculum. Simple demonstrations and activities that utilize multiple learning styles to engage students will be shown. Inexpensive and readily available materials will be used. The presentation will be beneficial to those teaching polymers for the first time as well as those wanting to beef-up their traditional polymer “fun” labs. The main topics of discussion will include definitions and examples, classification, sources, formation, structure, and properties. Examples of activities include using packaging peanuts to introduce natural and synthetic polymers. A “human chain” will simulate addition polymerization. Simple demonstrations comparing HDPE and LDPE are used to teach structure and properties. Other activities include a demonstration of blow molding, crystalline vs. amorphous properties, etc... Additional activities and handouts will be provided on a CD. |
