A convenient procedure is reported in which the surface of the silica particles was successfully functionalized with methacrylate functional group using 3-methacryloxy-propyldimethylchlorosilane agent. PMMA was successfully grafted onto the silica particles by “grafting through” using the methacrylate-functionalized silica particles in a RAFT polymerization. TEM shows the silica particles are well dispersed and nanoindentation modulus and hardness show these PMMA-silica nanocomposites exhibit improved mechanical and thermal properties.
