A new type of monolayer protected nanoparticles designed to mimic small cellular vesicles will be described. The nanoparticles contain a gold core of variable size from 5-60nm and a hydrophobic monolayer shell. The monolayer shell is about 1/3 of the density of typical alkyl thiol SAMs. Functional biomolecules for molecular recognitions and fluorescence probes can be anchored into the SAM as "mosaic" membrane for typical biological studies. The synthesis, characterization, and application of this type of nanoparticles in glyco-protein interactions will be presented.
