Aldol group transfer polymerization, discovered in the 1980's by Webster and Sogah at DuPont Central Research, is applied in this work to the preparation of quantum dot-poly(vinyl alcohol) nanocomposites. Benzyaldehyde-covered quantum dots were prepared and used as macroinitiators with vinyloxytrialkylsilane monomers, under Lewis acid mediated conditions, to give the desired poly(vinyl alcohol)-covered quantum dots.
