The Columbia University Materials Research Science and Engineering Center has adopted a multi-faceted approach to materials education and outreach, much of which is focused in the NY metropolitan area. Our activities are highlighted by two themes: (1) Summer research experiences for undergraduates (REU) and NYC high school teachers (RET). (2) Reaching out to New York City's diverse community. The aim of this component is to introduce and engage different populations to the world of materials science. The High School Visitation Program brings the excitement of materials science and engineering to public high schools in New York City through hands-on science demonstrations. Through our McNair CITIES Program, we work with small teams of public high school students on projects for in-school science fairs. The MRSEC program also reaches out to younger children and families through the development of rolling cart exhibits for materials education with the New York Hall of Science, a hands-on science and technology center that is visited by more than 300,000 patrons annually. We will discuss these programs, including assessment methods and the positive impact of program involvement on our graduate student participants.
