Using a 3-angle light scattering instrument equipped with a 785 nm laser, the absolute molecular weights of poly(2-methylaniline) bases in the pernigraniline, emeraldine, and leucoemeraldine oxidation states have been measured for the first time. These results are consistent with the 2-step mechanism for aniline polymerization that proceeds via the intermediacy of the pernigraniline oxidation state.
