Organic synthetic lab projects have been developed for an instrumental analysis lab course to teach important synthetic and lab skills and exposure to important instrumental methods. The incorporation of microwave-assisted and combinatorial synthetic lab projects in an instrumental analysis course and undergraduate research will be presented that supports the understanding of modern concepts in organic synthesis and the characterization of organic products by instrumental methods. These synthetic lab and research projects were found to have a dramatic improvement in these skill sets and the integration of new and existing student knowledge in the undergraduate curriculum.
